Authorities say substandard mesh and plastic sheets on the buildings' windows may have spread the blaze, which raged for more than a day in some blocks.

Authorities have begun investigating what sparked the blaze -- the financial hub's worst in almost 80 years -- including the presence of bamboo scaffolding and plastic mesh wrapped around the structures as part of a major renovation.

Police say the mesh and plastic sheets used on the scaffolding were substandard, and that windows were wrapped in highly flammable styrofoam.

The bag or box is made out of conductive metal mesh that blocks the electromagnetic signals that emit from the key fob, according to AAA.

There are some relatively simple steps homeowners can take, such as covering vents with mesh, that can slightly reduce the chance of a home burning.
