A rainbow crosswalk honouring the victims of the 2016 Pulse nightclub shooting in Florida, Orlando, has been painted over by the state's department of transportation.

The city won the grant money and kicked off community meetings to discuss installing a roundabout at the intersection, as well as adding enhanced crosswalks and other safety improvements to the immediate area.

The Transportation Department said crosswalks needed to comply with accessibility requirements before permanent installation.

A woman was killed by street racers in February in Los Angeles as she walked near a crosswalk on Normandie Avenue at 66th Street.

She was walking in a marked crosswalk at the time of the collision, which occurred around 7:30 p.m.
