It is home to a signature cemetery more lushly inviting than the urban spread around it, a place where a 22-foot tower of wooden beer pallets is an official San Fernando Valley cultural landmark.

Local residents say whole pallets of fruit are often left on the street.

Lulu, made of recycled pallets and wine barrels, is one of many trolls created worldwide by Danish artist and recycling activist Thomas Dambo and his team of veteran builders and volunteers.

Other aid drops have since taken place - but warnings have been issued about their safety, with reports that civilians were hit and killed by the falling pallets.
