U.S. and European models added a few heating degree days overnight, although after solid national demand for the next four days forecasts are “simply too warm over too much of the U.S. for the 5-15 day period,” NatGasWeather.com says in a note.

Keeping warm over the winter months can help to prevent colds, flu and more serious health problems such as heart attacks, strokes, pneumonia and depression, according to the NHS.

She called on the government to put in place mitigations to protect the most vulnerable and ensure they can keep warm over the winter.

“It’s a combination of El Niño and global warming as to why the oceans are so warm over such a broad region,” Swain said.
