seed down

Plant the young orchard to corn; cease cropping after six or seven years, and then seed down to clover.

I plant my orchard to sweet corn, using a cultivator, and cease cropping when I think necessary and seed down to red clover.

That is, if they make up their minds it is better to cultivate than it is to seed down, their trees are more apt to be neglected.
