Pregnant women who are exposed to lead face a higher risk of premature delivery, stillbirth, miscarriage and having babies with low birth weight.

“In pregnant women, the infection can cause miscarriages, stillbirths, premature delivery or life-threatening infection of the newborn,” the Food and Safety Inspection Service said.

The biopsy involves a surgical procedure that, among other things, can lead to negative pregnancy outcomes like premature delivery.

But the risk to a fetus is dire; infection during pregnancy “usually leads to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature delivery, or life-threatening infection of the newborn,” the CDC says.

“We had to perform a premature delivery of the fetus from the mother’s womb while she’s dying,” he said.
