In 1856 he surveyed and built the toll road across the Siskiyou mountains.
It became known as the “Shun” Pike because those who traversed it shunned the toll road.
The mountain portion of this is the old Barlow Road of the "immigrant" days in early Oregon, and is now a toll road.
