Sandisk, with a market capitalization of about $33 billion as of Monday, had stuck out in the small-cap index for being much bigger in terms of market value than the others.

It’s rare for a company to make the leap from the small-cap index to the S&P 500.

But it does raise the question of how it adds value to your portfolio compared with, say, high-tech stocks or small-cap stocks or even call options on the Nasdaq.

The company isn’t in the S&P 500 or S&P’s mid-cap and small-cap indexes.
