peripteros

The uppermost step of the peripteros, which forms a continuous base beneath the columns.

A temple, surrounded by one row of columns, was designated a Peripteros; if two rows of columns ornamented it, a Dipteros.

The foundations of the cella are also less accurately laid than those of the peripteros.

It is probable that the completed peripteros existed as early as the seventh century B.C.
