The U.S.’s most advanced aircraft carrier is in the region, along with a flotilla of warships and a force of Marines.

Their disappearance prompted a massive search that involved the authorities, the Mexican marines and the FBI.

Only instead of regrouping in hell, as that old Marines saying goes, it’s in the oceans, where such compounds were dumped for decades.

It brings to mind another famous saying, just as applicable to DDT’s longevity as the one about the Marines, from William Faulkner: “The past is never dead — it’s not even past.”

Marines and sailors invaded and occupied the port of Veracruz, ostensibly to block German arms shipments to the government of Mexican President Victoriano Huerta.
