late 14c., also frecken, probably from Old Norse freknur (plural) "freckles" (cf. Icelandic frekna, Danish fregne, Swedish frägne "freckle"), from PIE *(s)preg- "to jerk, scatter" (see sprout (v.)). Related: Freckles.
