The novel tells the story of a family of Oklahoma tenant farmers who lose their land during the Dust Bowl and migrate to California in search of work and stability.

The Crofters Holdings Act was enacted by William Gladstone's Liberal government and granted security of tenure to small-scale tenant farmers known as crofters.

This would affect lots of different people, like the owners of huge estates, tenant farmers and crofters, and community-run projects.

"The new Sustainable Farming Scheme has been designed to be accessible to all farmers, including new entrants and tenant farmers," a spokesperson added.

"This will hit the very poorest of farmers hardest, and in particular tenant farmers who'll not be able to afford the rent, and within a year we might be seeing people evicted because of that."
