The actress and stunt woman Susan Backlinie, whose portrayal of a violent death as the first shark attack victim in the opening scene of the blockbuster movie “Jaws” terrified moviegoers, died on Saturday.

Fewer than 10 years ago, Warner Bros. publicly apologized for casting a white stunt woman to double for a Black guest star in the superhero series “Gotham.”

The script called for her to channel nearly a decade of experience as a martial artist into the character of Ah Kam, a stunt woman working her way into the film industry.

She did not laugh, however, when it was suggested that a stunt woman had been involved in the scene.

She trained left-handed and producers revealed most of the fighting is done by the actress herself, not a stunt woman.
