“The minute you say, ‘salaam alaikum’ — ‘hello,’ you know — you give them a lot.

“It’s something I have wondered about: a man who was totally alone, a person who doesn’t socialize, just ‘salaam alaikum,’ and then moves on,” Mr. Mehdi said.

When, on Tuesday of this week, she addressed Parliament for the first time since the attack, she opened with the Arabic greeting of “As salaam alaikum.”
