Supporters say nuclear energy is becoming a viable answer to unprecedented power demand, delivering continuous, carbon-free power, even as others raise concerns about safety and the disposal of nuclear waste.

Opponents of the project point to the fact that a long-term storage facility for the UK's nuclear waste is yet to be agreed upon and say investment in renewable energy schemes - wind, wave and tidal - is what Anglesey needs.

Like many countries, including the United States, Japan lacks a safe nuclear waste storage system.

Environmental advocacy group the Sierra Club has raised concerns about nuclear waste from restarting Duane Arnold, highlighting also that the plant is “decades old and has known safety flaws, and components may have degraded during the five years of decommissioning.”

Oklo’s proposed design is also able to run on recycled nuclear waste.
