Mexico's government said Monday that 76 people had died in catastrophic floods and mudslides that hit the country's center and east this month, with another 27 still officially listed as missing.

This week’s rainstorm — considered the strongest in years for October — could bring flooding and mudslides to Southern California.

The National Weather Service warned that the “rare and very potent storm system” could fuel mudslides, thunderstorms, hail, and gusty winds capable of knocking down trees and power lines.

Last month, a similar pattern that pulled moisture north from Tropical Storm Mario triggered dangerous mudslides in the San Bernardino County mountains and flooding in the Inland Empire that killed one child.

A late summer monsoon that swept over Southern California last week, triggering mudslides and flash floods also destroyed multiple homes and led to a child’s death, officials said.
