Friday is Swiss national day, the equivalent of July 4th.

Big Bear Lake’s famed bald eagle couple has flown the coop, and naturalists are pointing to the city’s July 4th fireworks celebration as the likely culprit.

An 8-year-old girl was fatally struck by illegal fireworks on July 4th, according to the Buena Park Police Department.

As the country heads into July 4th weekend — a national holiday defined by paper plates, barbecue sauce and a proud disregard for utensils — the sanctimony around “civilized” eating feels more than a little selective.

“This is apparently the basis on which I’m being banned, and it doesn’t impact the July 4th contest.”
