The South American giant holds the world's second-largest reserves of these elements used in everything from electric vehicles, solar panels and smart phones to jet engines and guided missiles.

Senior administration officials including Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent have said China remains critically dependent on American products such as jet engines for its burgeoning aviation industry.

“Such measures could restrict shipments to China of goods containing or made with U.S. software, ranging from laptops to jet engines,” the analysts say.
