Since the release of “Out of Africa” in 1985, the ivory-tone hacking jacket and khaki safari looks that Meryl Streep wore on the savannah have been a recurrent theme on Ralph Lauren’s runway.

Traveling Partner Frederick Lintott of H. Huntsman & Sons, which specializes in hunting pinks and riding clothes, recalls vividly being awakened at 3 a.m. in his Biltmore suite in Manhattan by a Southern belle who wanted a hacking jacket fitted.

He bundles up in boots, a turtleneck, a ratty forest-green hacking jacket with a ragged velvet collar, and a shaggy sheepskin coat.

But you can't get much more horse country than the Michael Kors Fall 2001 collection, the epitome of the much discussed "equestrian look": tight, jodhpur-inspired stretch pants tucked in to knee-high boots and topped with a diamond-patterned sweater reminiscent of a jockey's uniform, or a tweed hacking jacket like the one pictured here.
