As the conflict flared, the Afghan foreign minister popped up in New Delhi and India announced closer relations with the once-hated Taliban.

"We are discussing with the member states how to better coordinate our actions regarding the shadow fleet," EU top diplomat Kaja Kallas said at a meeting with foreign ministers.

Zabihullah Mujahid, a spokesman for the Taliban, said ending "hostile actions" was "important", while Pakistan's foreign minister called the agreement the "first step in the right direction".

"The foreign minister has therefore decided to recall ambassador Fischer for consultations to discuss further steps," it added.

Asked about the decision, Germany's foreign minister said he respected the ruling and it was not the job of government to interfere with the courts.
