Now almost 40 years later, Dame Anna is preparing to hang up her Manolo Blahnik's, sort of – while she will no longer be editor-in-chief, she will remain on as global editorial director.

And that could mark a tonal shift in how the Lionesses are perceived culturally, according to Nicola Kemp, editorial director of marketing company Creativebrief.

Wintour, who will remain chief content officer for Condé Nast and global editorial director for Vogue, is a grand symbol of a magazine empire that includes Wired and Vanity Fair: a demanding, glamorous longtime chair of the Met Gala who has set fashion trends and made world-famous designers, some of whom she helped create, bow and tremble.

Dame Anna will continue as Vogue's global editorial director, as well as chief content officer for its parent company Conde Nast.
