It’s the closest stop for injured hikers and dehydrated tourists visiting Whitney or nearby Death Valley, which regularly receives more than 1 million visitors per year.

In Southern California, the weather service issued a flood watch for Death Valley National Park, the eastern and western Mojave Desert and Morongo Basin warning of moderate to heavy rainfall.

Palm Springs could hit above 113 and Death Valley is bracing for 120 degrees.

Anza-Borrego Desert State Park, Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley National Park have been designated Dark Sky Parks, possessing “exceptional or distinguished quality of starry nights and a nocturnal environment,” according to the organization.

The Mojave Desert has also been issued an extreme heat warning, with temperatures expected to reach 110, hitting as high as 122 degrees in Death Valley.
