At Eneco's headquarters in Rotterdam, Mr Kees-Jan Rameau highlights a large control panel that the company calls its "virtual power plant" and "the brain of our operations".

Some have buttons resembling the control panel of a spaceship; others have little faces that could be alien.

But as with the many monitors, the walkie-talkies and rotary phones and control panels all worked, a verisimilitude that, to Benesch, made each uninterrupted, carefully choreographed take that much more stressful.

Instead of a conventional treadmill’s control panel, there’s a grapefruit-size glowing blue button at snout height that the animals can press to run the machine for a few seconds.
