In Hungary, the crown appoints absolutely to all bishoprics, abbacies, and even to canonries.
The canonries, having been founded by Archbishops of York, were in the gift of the see, or of the Crown when the see was vacant.
Respect at first was also shown to canonries under royal patronage.
Had the Canonries been spared, an immense boon would have been secured for the Reformed Church.
On his recovery, Geert de Groote resigned his canonries, gave his goods to the Carthusians and spent seven years in solitude.
Accordingly he had to resign livings and canonries wholesale (April 28, 1410).
So, again, when Professor Hanky had spoken of canonries, he had none but the vaguest idea of what a canonry is.
The said four canonries shall be of the number of those of the erection of the Church.
