Scientists from the University of Florida and the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center made the discovery while studying the potential of mRNA-based therapies to activate the immune system against cancer.

"Because these young immune cells are created from stem cells, they could be used as personalized therapy with unlimited availability," said Jeffrey A. Golden, MD, executive vice dean for Education and Research.

"This is exciting because tRCC has very few effective treatment options today," said Yubin Zhou, MD, PhD, professor and director of the Center for Translational Cancer Research.

The analysis, which examined medical records from over 1,000 MD Anderson patients, is still preliminary.

Jones told the Morning News that he was diagnosed with cancer in June 2010 and began treatment at MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston soon after.
