With this first season, Hawley has given us an excellent tale about colonization that covers space, Earth, and body sovereignty, cautioning against presumptions of superiority.

More recently, Gonzales-Day has been making drawings that appropriate historical prints and paintings related to European colonization of the Americas.

An exhibition of the American Latino museum, it said, “characterizes U.S. history as rooted in ‘colonization.’”

Native American tribes survived Spanish colonization efforts, and Latino populations have grown to comprise nearly half the city despite Manifest Destiny’s attempts at displacement, proving the city’s fundamental capacity for survival and renewal.

Members of the Yurok Tribe say this effort and others like it are a critically important step in grappling with the lasting effects of colonization.
